PAU imparts training in drip irrigation and protected cultivation

Ludhiana, April 10, 2015: A five-day training programme on “Drip Irrigation, Fertigation and Protected Cultivation” concluded at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. The Precision Farming Development Center (PFDC), Department of Soil and Water Engineering, PAU organised the course, wherein a total of 36 farmers from the different parts of the state participated.

The Chief Guest, Dr Pushpinder Singh Aulakh, Additional Director of Extension Education, PAU, said water is precious and everybody should save it. The adoption of drip irrigation system and protected cultivation will lead the Punjab towards prosperity and help to save precious natural resources, he observed.

Dr Rajan Aggarwal, Head, Department of Soil and Water Engineering, said drip irrigation and fertigation are the best resource conservation technologies available to the farmers. Besides, he highlighted the importance of organizing these training programmes.

Dr Rakesh Sharda, Principal Investigator, PFDC said during this course farmers were provided hands-on-training in different aspects of drip irrigation and fertigation technologies such as installation and maintenance of drip irrigation system; and scheduling of irrigation and fertigation systems,” he added. The farmers were also imparted training in construction of protected cultivation structures such as poly houses and polynet houses, the cultivation practices of various vegetable crops and flowers, protection technologies and green house management.
