PAU-KVK Patiala empowers jail prisoners with skill development training
The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU)-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Patiala, organized two vocational training programmes on ‘Mushroom Cultivation’ and ‘Processing of Fruits and Vegetables’ for inmates of the Central Jail, Patiala. The initiative aimed to equip prisoners with valuable skills to support rehabilitation and future livelihood opportunities.
Ludhiana, January 15, 2025: The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU)-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Patiala, organized two vocational training programmes on ‘Mushroom Cultivation’ and ‘Processing of Fruits and Vegetables’ for inmates of the Central Jail, Patiala. The initiative aimed to equip prisoners with valuable skills to support rehabilitation and future livelihood opportunities.
A total of 90 jail prisoners (40 male and 50 female) participated in the training. Dr. Rachna Singla, Professor (Horticulture), provided comprehensive insights into the cultivation of button mushrooms and dhingri mushrooms, highlighting the simplicity and profitability of mushroom farming. Dr. Rajni Goel, Professor (Food Science and Technology), delivered lectures and conducted hands-on training sessions on the preparation of pickles, murabba, and chutneys, empowering participants with practical knowledge of food processing.
Dr. Hardeep Singh Sabhikhi, Deputy Director (Training), KVK, Patiala, briefed the participants about various skill development programs and activities offered by the KVK to enhance livelihoods. Smt. Deepti Goyal, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Patiala, interacted with the participants and encouraged the jail authorities to explore opportunities for marketing the products prepared by inmates, fostering a sense of purpose and economic potential.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Gaurav Sharma, Jail Superintendent, who motivated the participants to consider these skills as a pathway to future self-employment and improved livelihoods.
