In a significant effort to enhance the livestock sector, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Ropar, under the aegis of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, and ICAR ATARI, Zone-1, Ludhiana, organized an extensive training programme on pig farming from 23rd to 29th July. The program aimed to equip local farmers and rural youth with skills and knowledge to improve pig production and welfare.

Ludhiana, July 30, 2024: In a significant effort to enhance the livestock sector, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Ropar, under the aegis of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, and ICAR ATARI, Zone-1, Ludhiana, organized an extensive training programme on pig farming from 23rd to 29th July. The program aimed to equip local farmers and rural youth with skills and knowledge to improve pig production and welfare.

In the concluding session, Dr Satbir Singh, Deputy Director (Training), highlighted the initiative's goal to enhance the local economy by increasing the efficiency and productivity of pig farming. He emphasized the potential benefits of the training, which include higher quality produce and better animal welfare.

Dr Aparna, Associate Professor (Animal Science) and technical coordinator of the training detailed the comprehensive curriculum that covered animal health, nutrition, breeding techniques, and welfare standards. A key focus was on efficient waste utilization, including biogas production and waste as fish feed. The program included exposure visits to successful pig farms managed by KVK and hands-on sessions on piglet management, ensuring that farmers could implement best practices in their operations.

Participants expressed their readiness to adopt pig farming and appreciation towards KVK for the valuable training. The event concluded with Deputy Director Dr. Satbir Singh encouraging participants to leverage KVK's online networks to stay informed, support each other, and share best practices in pig farming.
