PAU-KVK Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar conducts vermicomposting training for farmers

Ludhiana, August 29, 2024: Punjab Agricultural University's Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar organised a one-day training session on vermicomposting on August 27 at the KVK campus, with 22 farmers in attendance.

Dr. Pardeep Kumar, Deputy Director (Training), highlighted the environmental benefits of vermicomposting, explaining how earthworms help reduce pollution by converting organic waste into nutrient-rich vermicompost. He emphasized that using vermicompost enhances soil fertility, improves crop yield, and boosts the quality of produce. Dr. Kumar encouraged the trainees to adopt vermicomposting as a sustainable practice and a potential source of income.

Dr. Jaswinder, Assistant Professor of Agronomy, provided a detailed explanation of the vermicomposting process. He outlined the steps for preparing a vermicompost bed, which involves constructing a cemented bed with specific dimensions (6 feet by 3 feet by 2 feet) and ensuring it is well-moistened and properly layered with crop residues and aged animal dung. He stressed the importance of maintaining appropriate moisture levels and protecting the bed from direct sunlight, cold, and heavy rain. With proper care, vermicompost will be ready for use in 60-70 days, benefiting field crops, fruits, and vegetables.
