Ludhiana, December 11, 2014: Under the theme “Empowering Lives, Building Futures,” the students of the Certificate Course on ‘Interactive Skills and Personality Enhancement,’ Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) took up an initiative of empowering the slum children living near the construction site at PAU. Seven children of migrant construction labourers and eight of PAU class four employees put together a scintillating show of choreography. Besides, they also staged a play in the University, conveying a strong message for the upliftment of the society through guided coaching, education and skill development. The NSS volunteers of PAU also attended the programme.
The Chief Guest, Dr R.K. Dhaliwal, Director Students’ Welfare, urged the students to spend a part of their daily routine towards empowerment activities for poor children and their families. “India can prosper only if this section of our society prospers,” she observed. Dr Dhaliwal lauded the students for shouldering the responsibilities of the down trodden.
The Course Trainer, Gulneet Chahal said that “The journey itself is a destination.” She expressed, “As educated and empowered citizens, we can bring about a real time change in the lives of these children and help them create a better future for themselves.” She further suggested, “To bring about the much needed thought revolution, each one of us must reach out to at least one down trodden kid outside.”
The documentary on the lives of the slum children, and their underlying passion to give wings to their dreams some day, struck an emotional chord with the audience. In addition to a kiosk called “Pause for a Cause,” greeting cards and small craft artefacts made by the slum children, as a part of the project, were put outside the auditorium, and a sum of Rs 10,000 was raised by selling these items. This money would be used to buy quilts for the kids to help them tide over the harsh winter months. The art work by the kids was also displayed at the venue.
