The Directorate of Extension Education in collaboration with the School of Organic Farming, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), conducted a two-day training programme on “Organic and Natural Farming” for the extension officers and staff of PAU.

Ludhiana, August 7, 2023: The Directorate of Extension Education in collaboration with the School of Organic Farming, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), conducted a two-day training programme on “Organic and Natural Farming” for the extension officers and staff of PAU. The programme was held under the aegis of the National Centre for Organic and Natural Farming, Ghaziabad, a subordinate office of INM division Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India. A group of 20 participants from different Krishi Vigyan Kendras and Farm Advisory Service Centres participated in the training which aimed at creating an idea of master trainers on organic and natural farming at the state level. These participants will help in motivating and handholding the farmers of Punjab to take up the mission of natural farming in the entire state.

Dr Gurmeet Singh Buttar, Director of Extension Education, who was the chief guest, highlighted the scope of organic and natural farming in Punjab with regard to resource conservation and production of quality produce to fetch premium price. He also cited examples of some farmers practicing organic farming in Punjab and discussed research activities regarding organic farming at PAU. Later, he distributed certificates among the participants and advised them to guide farmers regarding low input technologies and certification process in organic farming for income enhancement.

Dr Gagnesh Sharma, Director NCONF, Ghaziabad, apprised trainees of current government schemes initiatives on promotion of organic and natural farming in India. He also discussed various stages, process and agencies providing organic certification in India.

Dr Sachin Kumar Vaid, Junior Scientific Officer, NCONF, Ghaziabad, delved upon principles and practices of organic and natural farming along with preparation of on-farm inputs for maintaining and enhancing soil fertility.

Dr Rahul Kumar, Senior Scientist from ICAR, CIPHET-Ludhiana, discussed quality evaluation of organic and natural produce using advance method of analysis.

Another senior scientist Dr Ranjit from ICAR-CIPHET dwelt upon post-harvest handling and value addition of organic and natural produce.

Dr SS Walia, Director, School of Organic Farming, shed light on current scenario of organic and natural farming in Punjab. He also discussed the role of agriculture allied sectors in doubling farmers’ income. The participants visited the integrated farming systems model at PAU.
