Pavitra Punia on playing Vishkanya Laila in Sony SAB’s Tenali Rama
Says: “Vishkanya is dangerous, mysterious, and full of venom—traits that make the role even more exciting for me”

Sony SAB’s Tenali Rama continues to engage audiences with its compelling stories of the legendary court poet and master strategist, Tenali brought to life by the talented Krishna Bharadwaj. In this new chapter, Tenali returns to Vijayanagar to protect it from a threat foretold by Kali Maa (Barkha Bisht).
Vishkanya Laila (Pavitra Punia) has made a dramatic entry into Vijayanagar, disguising herself as a mesmerizing dancer with a hidden agenda—revenge. Beneath her graceful presence lies a sinister motive, as she seeks justice for a past wrongdoing. While her ultimate target is King Krishnadevaraya (Aditya Redij), her plans take an unexpected turn when Timmarasu (Amit Pachori) uncovers her secret. To silence him, she launches a lethal attack, leaving him gravely injured. As the main antagonist of this story arc, Vishkanya’s arrival sets off a gripping chain of events, bringing danger, intrigue, and a high-stakes battle between deception and truth in Vijayanagar.
In a candid conversation, Pavitra Punia talks about her experience playing Vishkanya Laila, the success of Tenali Rama, and more.
You recently entered Tenali Rama as Vishkanya. What intrigued you about this character?
What intrigued me about Vishkanya is the nature of the character and the genre itself. Fantasy and costume dramas have always been my favorite genres to portray on television. These roles come with multiple shades—action, intensity, and mystery—which I thoroughly enjoy. So, for me, there was no reason to say no to this role.
Your character is quite unique and dangerous. How did you prepare for this role?
Honestly, I don’t need much preparation for roles like this because they come naturally to me. I believe these roles have become my USP, and I take pride in it. I also feel honored that producers think of me for such roles because I always give my 100% and justify the character. Vishkanya is dangerous, mysterious, and full of venom—traits that make the role even more exciting for me.
Vishkanya is a mysterious and powerful character. How does her entry impact the storyline of Tenali Rama?
It has only been a few days since my character was introduced, and I can already sense that the audience is enjoying it. Whenever a new character enters a show, it brings fresh energy and intrigue. Vishkanya’s presence adds mystery and danger to the storyline because she is full of venom—both literally and metaphorically. I truly hope that my role contributes to the success of Tenali Rama and keeps the audience engaged for many more years.
Your look in the show is quite distinct. How was the experience of getting into the Vishkanya avatar?
For the first time, I’m wearing white while playing a negative character. Usually, such roles come with darker tones, but this look has an Apsara-like aura, which I absolutely love. The best part? It doesn’t take much time to get ready—just a quick transformation, and I’m set!
You’ve played strong, unconventional roles before. How different is Vishkanya from your past roles?
In terms of essence, Vishkanya is similar to my previous fantasy characters, but the look and styling bring a fresh appeal. Fantasy roles often have specific expressions and mannerisms, so in that sense, the approach remains the same. However, I’m playing such a character after a long gap, so it feels refreshing.
Lastly, any message for your fans as they gear up to see you in Tenali Rama?
I just want to say that I am truly grateful for the love my fans have always showered on me. Even when I play a villain, I receive so much appreciation—it’s overwhelming. I hope they continue to support me as Vishkanya in Tenali Rama and enjoy this new chapter in the show.
