Chandigarh, October 2, 2012: The Punjab Government has chalked out a comprehensive plan under 12th five year plan to revamp the canal network across the state in an order to increase canal capacity and to reduce dependence on ground water for irrigation.
This was disclosed by Sohan Singh Thandal, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Irrigation, Punjab.
He said that the Punjab Government has already earmarked Rs.1,128 crore for different irrigation project for the year 2012-13. He further said that the government was seriously contemplating to reduce the dependence on ground water to irrigate wheat and paddy crops.
Thandal said that the fast depletion of ground water table is major reason behind this project. He informed that the century old canal network, which is operating at 30 per cent below its designated capacity, is proposed to be rehabilitated. He said that the unlined water courses would be lined and low dams would be constructed in the hilly areas for the optimum use of surface and rain water for irrigation purposes.
CPS said that the major irrigation projects are relining of Rajasthan Feeder Project, relining of Sirhind Feeder Project, rehabilitation of four canals namely; Bist Doab Canal, Bathinda, Sidhwan and Abohar Branch, fed from river Sutlej besides completion of 18 km of Kandi Canal Phase-2 Project.
