PCMC Strengthens Local Climate Action with MoU Signing with AEEE: Advancing Sustainable Development and Energy Efficiency

Pune, Maharashtra, February 2, 2024: In a decisive step towards advancing sustainable development at the local level, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the PCMC office on Friday.

The MoU establishes a robust framework for long-term cooperation between PCMC and AEEE, with a primary objective of supporting PCMC in implementing local climate actions across multiple sectors. . This collaboration aims to contribute significantly to decarbonisation and emission intensity reduction through energy efficiency initiatives.

In an exemplary demonstration of climate leadership, the State of Maharashtra has actively sought to catalyse sub-national climate action with technical assistance from recognised organisations. AEEE, as one of the key partners, is committed to strengthening institutional capacities and promoting climate actions in the areas of Industries, Buildings, and Energy Efficiency.

Over a three-year collaboration between PCMC and AEEE, the focus will be on enhanced adoption of energy-efficient solutions across various thematic areas including Buildings, Industries, Space Cooling, Energy Financing, and Demand Side Management. This encompassing effort will involve activities such as policy development, program design, feasibility analysis, implementation facilitation, capacity building, and awareness creation.

Announcing the MoU, Shekhar Singh, Commissioner, PCMC stated, "Pune's remarkable transformation into a bustling metropolis underscores the urgency for sustainable practices across sectors. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our efforts to decarbonise and adopt net-zero practices and solutions as a strategic commitment to shape Pune into a resilient city. By partnering with AEEE, we aim to leverage their expertise to enhance energy efficiency and decarbonisation in the region and contribute to broader climate goals."

Satish Kumar, President and Executive Director of AEEE, expressed, "AEEE has been supporting sub-national actions in different states, including Maharashtra. This collaboration with PCMC further strengthens our efforts to contribute to the decarbonisation and energy efficiency goals of this fast-growing city.
