"'Peechha Karti Parchhaiyaan' shows that patriarchy negatively impacts both men and women:" Param Singh

The actor who stars in Zee Theatre's upcoming teleplay shares that KK Raina and Ila Arun taught him the nuances of script analysis

Popular TV star Param Singh is known for essaying memorable characters on Indian Television. He now plays the tragedy-stricken son of a feudal family in Rajasthan in Zee Theatre's upcoming teleplay 'Peechha Karti Parchhaiyaan', which will premiere on Dish TV & D2H Rangmanch and Airtel Spotlight on 1st September.

The play has been adapted by film, television, theatre and music icon Ila Arun from  Henrik Ibsen’s classic play ‘Ghosts’ and directed for stage by stalwart KK Raina who represents the face of societal patriarchy in the story. Set in Rajasthan, the teleplay features Param as Yuvraj who is unaware of the calamitous legacy of his late father Maharaja Kunwar Viraj Bhanu Pratap Singh. When ghosts from the past emerge to haunt the present, Yuvraj, despite the efforts of his protective mother Rani Yashodhara, (played by Ila Arun) pays the biggest price.

Talking about the salient themes of patriarchy in the teleplay, Param says, "Patriarchy impacts men and women equally.  For instance, men are supposed to provide and protect but they are not even allowed to be vulnerable or speak about their psychological issues. There is so much stigma against men who are unemployed. They have to be the breadwinners.  We can never say that we want to get married and just be a homemaker."

Discussing his own character, he adds, "I interpreted Yuvraj as a young man who unconsciously becomes exactly like his father.  When he discovers a secret about the girl he has fallen in love with,  he doesn't want to live. At that moment he just wants to die and be free of the pain he has been going through. That pain was something that I tapped into during the rehearsal process."

The actor who did theatre in college, completed a course with Barry John in 2011 and has done plays with IPTA (Indian People's Theatre Association) credits Ila Arun for bringing him back to the stage after a gap of over 10 years. He explains, "In 2022 Ila ma’am approached me to play Yuvraj.  I met her and KK sir and when they told me the story, I came onboard. I wanted to work with them, learn from them and transition from television to something different. Working with them taught me the nuances of script analysis and we performed this play together for almost two years. "

Thrilled to now be playing a part in the teleplay version as well, he says, "Our filming director Saurabh sir also gave us a lot of freedom to improvise. He didn't interfere in the character analysis because that had already been put in place by KK sir."

The star cast of  'Peechha Karti Parchhaiyaan' also includes popular actor Priyamvada Kant and veteran actor Vijay Kashyap.
