Plant Breeding Holds Training Course

Ludhiana, August 26, 2015: A 21-day training programme on “Mendelian Genetics to Molecular Genetics in relevance to Plant Breeding” concluded in the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics (PBG), Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. The course, 30th in the series, was held under the aegis of Centre of Advanced Faculty Training in Genetics and Plant Breeding. A total of 15 scientists from eight states attended the programme.
 
Chairing the concluding session, Dr Neelam Grewal, Dean, Postgraduate Studies, PAU highlighted the achievements of eminent breeders of PAU and exhorted the candidates to be more pro-active in their research programme. Dr Grewal further emphasized that the candidates should remain in touch with crop specialists of PAU and strengthen collaborative research programmes with the University as co-major guides of postgraduate students.
 
Eminent scientists from various farm institutes namely Dr S.S. Banga, National Professor (ICAR), PAU; Dr S.K. Sharma, Ex-Vice Chancellor, Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishwavidyalaya and Prof. Emeritus CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur; Dr V.K. Bhatia, Ex-Director, Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute, New Delhi; Dr Pankaj Kaushal, Head, Crop Improvement, Indian Grassroot and Forest Research Institute, Jhansi; Dr Sundip Kumar, Professor, GBPUAT, Pantnagar; Dr. D.S. Brar, Adjunct Professor, PAU and Dr G.S. Chahal, Director, Sir Rattan Tata Trust delivered talks on special topics.
 
Certificates were awarded to the candidates after successful completion of the programme. The function was also attended by Dr K.S. Thind, Head, PBG; Dr S.K. Dhillon, Professor of Plant Breeding; and Section Incharges and faculty of PBG.
