PM will launch Torch Relay for Chess Olympiad on June 19
Dharamsala, June 16, 2022: Anurag Singh Thakur, Ministry for I&B and Youth Affairs and Sports Government of India informed that on 19th June, a new chapter will be added to Indian Sports when PM Narendra Modi will launch the 1st-ever Torch Relay for Chess Olympiad from IG stadium Delhi.
The minister said that the torch will travel across 75 locations in India before reaching Mahabalipuram, the venue of 44th Chess Olympiad.
The 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad and FIDE congress shall be organised on 28 Jul, 2022 –10 Aug, 2022 will be held in Chennai. Chess is believed to have originated in India and Chennai has a great history of chess. Chennai is the Homeland of legendary 5 times world champion Viswanathan Anand and is called Mecca of Indian chess.
It is informed that approximately 2000 participants from almost 200 countries will be there for 14 days in Chennai. This year India celebrates its 75th anniversary of Independence as Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav and it is a great honour for the country to host the guests from all over the world.
