PPBM leaders warn Punjab Govt to withdraw Sunday lockdown in Ludhiana

Ludhiana:  Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal (PPBM) leaders have warned the state government to withdraw Sunday lockdown in Ludhiana, otherwise, they will be constrained to take some drastic steps after holding a meeting of the mandal in the near future.

Addressing a press conference here today, the mandal's state general secretary Sunil Mehra and other leaders namely Pawan Lehar, Arvinder Makkar, Ashwini Mahajan, Rajiv Arora and Surinder Agarwal also regretted that the state government is also not announcing any package for traders across Punjab. They categorically stated that they will be constrained to further intensify the ongoing struggle against the state government, if their demands are not met, and the entire responsibility for the same will lie on the state government itself.

They pointed out that trade activities have suffered heavily due to the pandemic in the last about two years. Even Punjab's economy has suffered a great loss, they said, and claimed that 60 percent of Punjab's trade and industry have been closed. People are finding it difficult to pay their loan installments. The labour in large numbers too has migrated to their native states due to the uncertain situation, they said.

They pointed out that there is no lockdown on Sundays in cities like Jalandhar and Chandigarh but it exists in Ludhiana, where wholesale markets exist during Sundays. The Congress government in the state, its ministers, MLAs and leaders  are giving step-motherly treatment to traders, which is not tolerable. This is why traders are feeling scared to come to Ludhiana from other parts of the country. The trade activities have almost crashed in Ludhiana, they claimed.
