Prestigious Prof. S.R. Vyas Memorial Award for PU Professor

Chandigarh, December 13, 2018: Prof.(Mrs.) Praveen Rishi, Department of Microbiology and former Dean Faculty of Science, Panjab University, has been conferred with the prestigious Prof.S.R.Vyas Memorial Award during the 59th Annual conference of Association of Microbiologists of India, held at University of Hyderabad from 8th to 12th Dec 2018 in view of her contributions to Microbiology. The award includes the citation, certificate and a cash prize of Rs.20,000.
Dr.Praveen Rishi has multiple research interests with core research programmes in Medical Microbiology. She has made noteworthy contributions and her work revealed for the first time that (i) Cadmium acquired by Salmonella from the environment, is one of the factors for the enhanced antibiotic resistance of the pathogen, (ii) She has also reported that in the presence of antimicrobial peptides Salmonella is rendered sensitive to the antibiotics to which it is otherwise resistant, (iii) In the field of diagnostic microbiology, antibody/aptamer prototypes have been developed in collaboration with CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh for detection of Salmonella in environmental samples as well as to diagnose Typhoid fever. In this context, she has filed the patents and has already signed an MoU with the industry to develop the diagnostic kit, and (iv) Her work on better management of alcohol liver disease using a microstructuredsynbox system comprising Lactobacillus plantarum and EGCG is also noteworthy.
Dr. Rishi has 125 research publications to her credit. She has already been a Fellow of Academy of Microbiological Sciences, India (FAMSc) as well as of Indian Association of Biomedical Scientists (FABMS). She has also been the recipient of DBT overseas Associateship, INSA visiting fellowship and Dr. Y.S. NarayanaRao Oration ICMR Award.
