Rohtak, April 23, 2025: As part of its ongoing Constitution Day Celebrations, the Dada Lakhmi Chand State University of Performing and Visual Arts (DLC SUPVA), Rohtak, hosted a thought-provoking and highly engaging special lecture by Prof. Vageshwari Deswal, a distinguished academician from the Department of Law, University of Delhi. The lecture focused on “Women Empowerment: Legal Frameworks and the Path to Equality” was attended by an enthusiastic audience of students, faculty members and varsity officials.
Prof. Deswal, widely known for her incisive legal scholarship and advocacy for gender justice, addressed the evolving landscape of women's rights in India through the lens of constitutional guarantees and statutory provisions. Her lecture traced the historical trajectory of gender-based legislation in India, from the foundational rights enshrined in the Constitution to progressive judicial pronouncements and recent policy interventions.
She highlighted critical judgments of the courts and key sections of the Indian Penal Code that address crimes against women. The lecture also engaged with challenges around implementation, gaps in enforcement, and the cultural and social dynamics that often dilute the spirit of such legislations.
Delivering her keynote, Prof. Vageshwari Deswal remarked- “Women empowerment is not merely a social slogan—it is a constitutional mandate. The Indian Constitution enshrines gender equality as a fundamental right, and the judiciary has time and again reinforced this through landmark judgments. But true empowerment goes beyond legal protections; it requires a shift in societal attitudes, institutional sensitivity, and informed citizenry. Law alone cannot transform; it is the collective will of society that must sustain it.”
The lecture was followed by an interactive session, where students raised pertinent questions on legal recourse, institutional mechanisms for redressal and the role of media and education in promoting gender sensitivity. Prof. Deswal emphasized the importance of legal awareness among young citizens and urged them to not only know their rights but also become advocates of equity and inclusion in their everyday spaces.
The event was part of a week-long series of programs organized by DLC SUPVA to commemorate the ideals and values enshrined in the Indian Constitution. Senior faculty members including Dr. Ajay Kaushik Dean Academic Affairs, Dr. Shelly Khanna HOD Design, Vinay Kumar HOD Visual Arts, Dr Sima, Chairperson ICC, Dr Benul Tomar, Director, PR and Ajay Bahu, Head, Architecture were present on the occasion.
