Ludhiana, November 6, 2019: A lady from Liberia aged 37 years, had contacted the Department of Ophthalmology, CMC Ludhiana, in April 2019 for a second opinion regarding her ocular condition.

Dr.Nitin Batra, Professor, Department of Ophthalmology explained the condition and the possible management, based on the photographs and documents sent, through e-mails and telephone calls. The patient had suffered from an ocular injury many years ago and her cornea was totally opaque now. At present she was suffering with a painful blind eye. Apart from that, being a young woman, she was very upset because of the cosmetic disfigurement and was avoiding any social interaction.

The Liberian Embassy was informed about the condition and management of the patient and also the time required for a follow up at CMC, Ludhiana.

In September 2019, after all the protocols were met with, an evisceration surgery with implant was successfully performed in the right eye by Dr. Nitin Batra and Dr. Anubhav Baveja. The patient came regularly for a follow up and recovered well. After an uneventful postoperative period of 5 weeks, a prosthetic Ocular implant (artificial eye) was fixed by Mr.Anil R Singh, in-charge of the Prosthetic Eye Unit, CMC, Ludhiana.

The patient is totally satisfied with the treatment and is now ready to leave for Liberia. With the prosthetic eye, there has been a total change in her personality and, as she claims, she has been “very, very happy” after a very long time.
