Protect Wetlands to Sustain Ecosystem
Pushpa Gujral Science City celebrated World Wetlands Day with a strong appeal for action, highlighting the urgent need to conserve and sustain wetlands. This day marks the adoption of the Ramsar Convention in 1971. Over 150 students from various parts of Punjab actively participated in the event. The theme for this year "Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future," underscores the invaluable role wetlands play in preserving biodiversity and enhancing human well-being.

Kapurthala, February 4, 2025: Pushpa Gujral Science City celebrated World Wetlands Day with a strong appeal for action, highlighting the urgent need to conserve and sustain wetlands. This day marks the adoption of the Ramsar Convention in 1971. Over 150 students from various parts of Punjab actively participated in the event. The theme for this year "Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future," underscores the invaluable role wetlands play in preserving biodiversity and enhancing human well-being.
On this occasion Dr. Rajesh Grover, Director, Pushpa Gujral Science City, emphasized that wetlands are among the world's most productive ecosystems, essential for wildlife preservation. He said that Wetlands help us cope with the impacts of climate change and secure critical freshwater resources. They have shaped human cultures over centuries, inspiring creativity and sustaining livelihoods, we need healthy wetlands for our future and well-being.
Dr. Grover further highlighted the multifaceted importance of wetlands, including their role in storing carbon dioxide to mitigate climate change, supporting key economic activities such as fishing, farming, and tourism, and serving as vital habitats for biodiversity, particularly migratory birds. He also stressed that wetlands act as natural buffers against river flooding and play a crucial role in safeguarding coastlines.
As part of the celebration, slogan and poster-making competitions were organized to engage students in wetland conservation awareness. The winners of these competitions were: Hanan Ashraf from Army Public School, Beas, who secured the first position, Sakshi from Chanakya International School Jalandhar, who won the second prize and Aryan Kumar from Shiv Jyoti Public School who stood third.
