Ludhiana, January 4, 2013: A large number of farmers under the banner of BKU (Lakhowal) staged a protest outside the office of Deputy Commissioner here today.

They also submitted a memorandum to DC.

On being contact, Harwinder Singh, a BKU leader, told City Air News that the protestors demanded that minimum support price (MSP) of wheat should be fixed at Rs. 2,250 per quintal as per the Dr. Swaminathan recommendations.

He said the BKU felt that hike of Rs. 65 was inadequate, adding the MSP had been fixed at Rs. 1,350 per quintal last year.

The BKU men also demanded that the loans of the indebted farmers be waived off and they should be given fresh interest free loans.

It was also demanded that the farmers of Punjab should be allowed to purchase agricultural lands in other states across the country, as people from other states were free to but lands in Punjab.

The state government was also urged not to take possession of lands, property, animal wealth and other immovable property of the indebted farmers.
