Jalandhar, March 28, 2023: The Department of Applied Sciences of DAVIET, Jalandhar, celebrated National Mathematics Day 2023 with great enthusiasm and zeal to commemorate the birth anniversary of the legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. It was a day filled with activities, competitions, and discussions that encouraged the students to develop an interest in mathematics. The event was catalyzed and supported by the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST), National Council of Science and Technology Communication (NCTSC), and the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.

Dr Sanjeev Naval, Principal DAVIET welcomed the Chief Guest Dr. Arvind K Agnihotri, Professor (HAG) and Head, Department of Civil Engineering, Dr. BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology Jalandhar, Chairman, Indian Geotechnical Society (Jalandhar Chapter), and Dr Neha Yadav Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, Dr. BR Ambedkar NIT Jalandhar

Dr. Kanchan L Singh, Head Department of Applied Sciences, delivered the welcome address at the National Mathematics Day celebration at DAVIET. She spoke about the need to create awareness among students about the importance of mathematics and its applications in everyday life. She highlighted the importance of National Mathematics Day to recognize and honor the contribution of mathematicians in the development of science and to inspire future generations of mathematicians.

Dr. Rajni Sharma, Convenor of National Science Day, highlighted the importance of mathematics and its relevance to everyday life. She also spoke about how maths is essential in solving some of the world's most pressing problems. She talked about the need for new learning strategies and innovative pedagogical approaches to teaching maths in an engaging way.

Dr. Sanjeev Naval spoke about the importance of Mathematics in science and technology and emphasized the need for interdisciplinary studies. He stated that Maths is one of the most important subjects, forming the basis for various activities. Maths surrounds us from when we wake up until we go to bed. He also explained how Maths was used in jobs like engineering and architecture, which involve calculations and measurements. He encouraged everyone to use every opportunity to practice and understand Maths better. He touched upon the life of Srinivasa Ramanujan and highlighted his belief that through his equations, he served the higher purpose of the almighty.

Dr. Arvind K Agnihotri, spoke about the importance of mathematics in everyday life. He said that mathematics is the language of science and engineering, and it is essential to have a strong foundation in mathematics to become a successful engineer. He also highlighted the importance of Vedic Mathematics. He shared that mathematics is the key to unlocking the mysteries of the universe, and it is essential to nurture creativity and innovation to make progress in mathematics. He concluded his speech by saying that mathematics should be seen not only as a subject but also as an art, and its applications should be used to improve the world.

The event's highlight was the expert lecture on "Mathematics for Machine Learning" by Dr. Neha Yadav, She discussed how mathematics could improve the accuracy and performance of artificial intelligence algorithms. She explored how linear algebra, calculus, probability and statistics, and optimization can all be applied to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of machine learning models. She also discussed how mathematical tools like graph theory, game theory, and optimization could help machines "learn" to identify patterns, make decisions, and build models more efficiently. Dr. Yadav highlighted the importance of mathematics in understanding and improving the performance of machine learning applications. Her lecture demonstrated that mathematics is essential for developing and optimizing sophisticated machine-learning algorithms.

Dr. Neeru Sharma delivered the Vote of Thanks and expressed her gratitude towards the dignitaries for sparing time out of their schedules and gracing the occasion with their presence.

Various events were conducted, including a Quiz Competition by the well-respected and well-known quiz master Dr. Dinesh Kumar, Associate Professor, Political Science, DAV College Jalandhar. The other events included Mathematical Poem Recitation, Mathematical Origami, Mathematical Rangoli, Poster Making, and Mathematical Expo (Still/ Working Model and Poster Presentation).

The event was a grand success and was appreciated by everyone present. It was a great platform to explore and exhibit the mathematical skills of the students of DAVIET.
