PU, Chandigarh and UWS, Australia to jointly hold a research workshop at PU on Jan 10

Chandigarh, January 7, 2015:  Panjab University (PU) Chandigarh and University of Western Sydney (UWS), Australia would jointly hold a research workshop at PU on January 10. The joint research activity is being organised consequent to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between PU and UWS, Australia in August, 2014.

Dean International Students, Prof Ramanjit Kaur Johal informed that there would be two technical sessions on different themes and one general session. UWS delegation of five members led by Dean Kevin Dunn would participate in two Joint Research Workshops on the themes of Cloud based language independent keywords extraction system and Dealing with diversity.

In the joint Research Workshop on ‘Dealing with Diversity’ (dealing with difference in the city and the nation, migration), PU will be represented by Dr. Swarnjit Kaur from Centre for Human Rights & Duties, Prof. Harpreet Pruthi & Prof Pushpinder Syal from Department of English and Cultural Studies PU, Dr.Harpreet Vohra from PU Regional

Center, Ludhiana. UWS would be represented by Dean of the School of Social Science and Psychology Prof Kevin Dunn, Director, Engagement & International, Dean's Unit School of Social Sciences & Psychology Dr Renu Narchal and Senior Research Fellow, Diversities, Ethics & Education Research Group, Dr Nida Denson.

In the joint Research Workshop on Cloud based language independent keywords extraction system, Dr. Vishal Gupta, Ms. Narvinder Kaur and  Saurabh Sharma from UIET PU and UWS Senior Lecturer (Mathematics) Dr. Laurence Park & UWS Associate Lecturer (Computing & ICT) Ms. Simi Bajaj would participate. The session would also discuss aspects like sentiment analysis and other automated means for analysing big data.

General Session, to be presided over by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Arun Grover and attended by the Dean University Instruction, Prof. A. K. Bhandari, would take stock of the outcomes of the workshops and the plan of action for joint activities between the two Universities in the future. Deans, faculty members and other participants from the two Universities would also participate in the session.

Dean International Students, Prof Ramanjit Kaur Johal, has expressed satisfaction at the progress of academic activities under the PU-UWS collaboration agreement. 

It may be recalled that PU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Arun Kumar Grover and UWS, VC Prof. Barney Glover had signed the MoU as per which both the leading Universities of India and Australia had agreed to cooperate for development of collaborative research projects; organisation of joint academic and scientific activities, like courses, conferences, seminars, symposia or lectures; exchange of academic staff for teaching and research activities; exchange of students to undertake study or participate in research programs and exchange of publications and other information of common interest.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2014, the UWS is considered as a research-led metropolitan university of Australia operating over multiple teaching campuses in Greater Western Sydney. UWS was ranked as one of the world’s top 100 universities under the age of 50 in the influential Times Higher Education rankings.
