Punjab To Ban Plastic Bags In Urban Areas From April 1: Joshi


Chandigarh, February 18, 2016: The Punjab Government has taken a momentous decision to bolster the campaign of making country clean and hygienic. The state government has decided to enforce ban on plastic bags in urban areas from 1st April, 2016. Disclosing this here today, Local Bodies Minister, Mr. Anil Joshi said that this decision would prove be of landmark value in making ‘Swachh Bharat’ campaign of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, a resounding success.
The minister said that as per a notification issued in this regard, production, distribution, purchase, selling and recycling of plastic bags in all the Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats of state has been banned. He further informed that apart from this, ban would also be strictly enforced on one time use material manufactured from thermocol but with the exemption of packing material. It is important to mention that under section 7 of Punjab Plastic carry Bag Act, non-bio degradable plastic carry bags or containers, with the inclusion of items made from thermocol, are already under ban.
Mr. Joshi said that Commissioners in Municipal Corporations and Executive Officers (E.O.s) in Municipal Councils/Nagar Panchayats have been nominated for the purpose of lodging complaints regatding violation of these orders. Besides this, 3 Chief Engineers have been assigned the duty of conducting surprise checks in all the districts. Under section 18 of the Act, Divisional Commissioners and Regional Deputy Directors of department have been nominated as appellate authorities.
Making an appeal to the people to not use plastic carry bags, he said that the success of this endeavor greatly depends on co-operation of the people.
