As per the available data, crime rate has dropped in Punjab during 2022 compared to 2021.
This data has been made available by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai in reply to a question asked by MP (Rajya Sabha) from Ludhiana Sanjeev Arora in the recently concluded winter session of Rajya Sabha. Arora had asked how the crime rate has varied in the country in the year 2022, as per the latest records of NCRB; and the State-wise, category-wise details thereof.
The Minister mentioned in his answer that National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) compiles and publishes information on crimes in its publication ‘Crime in India’. The published reports are available till the year 2022. He also made available the State/UT-wise details of the crime rate for various cognizable crimes under Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Special and Local Laws (SLL) during 2021 and 2022.
As per the data, crime rate per lakh population in Punjab has dropped to 240.6 during 2022 from 242 during 2021. In the year 2021, Crime Rate per lakh population in Punjab under Cognizable IPC and SLL Crimes was 152.8 and 144.9, respectively. In the year 2022, Crime Rate per lakh population in Punjab under Cognizable IPC and SLL Crimes was 89.2 and 97.7, respectively.
Giving this information here today, Arora said it is a matter of sigh of relief for all that the crime rate has started dropping in Punjab. He hoped that crime rate will further drop during next year’s data (2023) because the ruling AAP government under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is making all out efforts to check crime and drug menace in the state. He said the state’s police have taken a tough stand against criminals and anti-social elements, which is a matter of appreciation.
