Academicians Stand By The Punjab Medical Council - Criticise Medical Education Minster Anil Joshi
Ludhiana, August 28, 2015: Prominent educationists associated with Punjab Educationists for Peace and Development (PEPD) have expressed serious concern and anguish over the anti –people, anti- education, illegal and unconstitutional diktat of the minister for medical education and research, Punjab, Mr.Anil Joshi, who recently thwarted and sabotaged initiatives taken by Punjab Medical Council (PMC) to curb and control malpractices in private medical colleges of the state.

The council, a statutory body, had detected hundreds of ghost faculty working in the medical colleges and put them under notice by issuing show cause to the defaulting faculty and institutions. But the minister for reasons best known to him put his wrong foot forward and applied brakes to the whole process, they said.

Phenomena of ghost faculty in medical and engineering colleges, dishing out substandard education on exorbitant prices, is a fact well known to the apex national bodies such as medical council, AICTE etc. The minister, instead of performing his constitutional duty of upholding the public interest appears to have succumbed to the pressure of the private commercial interests in professional education and has betrayed his mandate, they said, adding “We appeal to the Chief Minister Punjab to intervene and set his house in order”.

The signatories to the statement include principal Tarsem Bahia and Dr.Kuldeep Singh, chairman and secretary respectively of the PEPD, Prof.K B S Sodhi and Prof. Jaipal Singh former presidents of Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PECTU) and Government College Lectures Association (GCLA) respectively.
