Guru Kashi University established by Punjab Act No 37 of 2011 celebrated its Foundation Day on Tuesday, on the occasion, Parkash Singh Badal, Chief Minister, Punjab inaugurates the University MONUMENT.

 

Talwandi Sabo, September 10, 2013: Guru Kashi University established by Punjab Act No 37 of 2011 celebrated its Foundation Day today with great enthusiasm.

Parkash Singh Badal, Chief Minister, Punjab was the Chief Guest. He also inaugurated the University MONUMENT, the structure of which reflects that this University derives its name from the teachings of Guru Gobind Singh, Tenth Guru of the Sikhs.           

Dr. J.S Dhaliwal, Chancellor of the University, while addressing the gathering, narrated how he got inspiration from Giani Kewal Singh in 1997 to set up some educational institution in this Guru Ki Nagri and set up Balaji Education Trust for this purpose. First of all, a Polytechnic was established followed by Shri Guru Gobind Singh Engg College and five other colleges. In order to translate Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s dream into reality, Guru Kashi University came into existence in 2011. He stated with regret that contrary to his keen desire, Surinder Kaur Badal was not physically present today. It was none else but Badal who was a force behind the setting up of this University. He assured that the University will certainly turn her dreams into reality.

Dr. N.S. Malhi, Vice-Chancellor dwelt upon elaborately the objectives, the University aims at. The main objective is the development of agriculture, particularly horticulture in this south-western region of the state and emphasis on skill development to ensure self-employment and job avenues for the youth. Besides quality education, it shall be our earnest endeavour to make our students morally and spiritually strong imbibed with human values. We shall boost the Nanhi-Chhan project launched by Bibi Harsimrat Kaur Badal. All-out efforts will be made to eradicate social evils like Drug-addiction and female foeticide.  In order to channelise the energy of the youth for constructive work, they will be trained through diploma/certificate courses in Petro-chemicals, Welder, Electrician, Plumber, Tractor, Mechanic, Mobile Repair, TV Mechanic etc. It will also serve the purpose of catering to the needs of Refinery, Thermal Plant and other industries of the Bathinda district. For this purpose, the University has fully-equipped laboratories, infrastructure and highly equipped and talented staff.

In his keynote address, Parkash Singh Badal emphatically stated that this University should make it a point that it would certainly work to ameliorate the lot of weaker section of the society through development of agriculture, horticulture and skill development programmes for the youth. It appreciated the work being done and what the University is contemplating for the future. He laid stress upon the eradication of social evils particularly the drug addiction which is eating into the vitals of the youth. He strongly stated the establishment of this University will be useful only if it succeeds in creating awareness among the rural population of the surrounding areas to absorb themselves in creative work.

Some prominent dignitaries who have made significant contribution in various fields were honoured by the GKU. Among these were great environmentalist Padam Bhushan Baba Sewa Singh Ji of Khadoor Sahib Dr. Baldev Singh Dhillon, an internationally renowned agricultural scientist and now working as Vice-Chancellor of Asia’s premier Agriculture University, PAU, Ludhiana, a well-known singer turned actor, Harbhajan Mann, famous Punjabi singer and Babu Singh Mann, an eminent lyricist.   

Dr. Gurbhajan Singh Gill, Director (Planning & Development) who anchored the whole function narrated the brief but significant achievements of these personalities.

Gurlabh Singh, Chairman, Guru Kashi University thanked the Chief Minister and other distinguished guests, district administration for their benign presence to grace the occasion. He assured the Chief Minister that Guru Kashi University will leave no stone unturned in fulfilling the mission entrusted to it and will certainly come upto the expectation of the people of this area of the Malwa Region.
