PU’s The Department of Life Long Learning and Extension today celebrated the “International Women’s Day”. About 30 faculty members, students and staff members of Department of Life Long Learning & Extension and other departments attended the Programme.

Chandigarh, March 6, 2025: PU’s The Department of Life Long Learning and Extension today celebrated the “International Women’s Day”. About 30 faculty members, students and staff members of Department of Life Long Learning & Extension and other departments attended the Programme.  

Delivering the lecture Dr. Parmjit Singh Kang, Chairperson, Department of Life Long Learning and Extension, Panjab University said that this year, the theme of International Women’s Day 2025 is, "Accelerate Action."  This annual event recognises women’s contributions across various fields, raises awareness about gender equality, and promotes empowerment. It serves as a platform to highlight social, economic, cultural, and political achievements while advocating for women’s rights worldwide, she added.

It focuses on recognising women's achievements and promoting gender equality under the theme 'Accelerate Action'. The day serves as a platform for activism and addressing gender disparities. Significant for evaluating accomplishments and renewing commitment to a gender-equal future, it fosters international unity among women.


Prof. Sween (Retd.) delivered the lecture on the theme and said that at the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158, which is roughly five generations from now, to reach full gender parity, according to data from the World Economic Forum.  She cited current data about the participation of Women in different sector of economy. 
 Dr. Gaurav Gaur, from Centre for Social Works stressed on the fact of Women hygiene and health particularly the Women of 18-45 years groups.
 
Focusing on the need to Accelerate Action,  Prof. Ajaib Singh (Retd.) emphasised the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality. It calls for increased momentum and urgency in addressing the systemic barriers and biases that women face, both in personal and professional spheres. He cited the example of rural area that women are not uplifted there.
 
 Dr. Kuldip Singh, Chairperson, Centre for Police Administration said that International Women’s Day is also known as the United Nations (UN) Day for the Women’s Right and International Peace.  It recognises and celebrates the women and girls who are championing the advancement of transformative technology and digital education. At the end, Dr. Kang proposed a vote of thanks.
