Ludhiana, October 14, 2024: With Minister of External Affairs Dr. S. Jaishankar's upcoming visit to Pakistan on October 15-16 for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government, Sanjeev Arora, MP (Rajya Sabha) from Ludhiana, has written to him on Monday, urging the resumption of trade between the two nations.

In his communication, Arora urged upon the Minister to advocate for the resumption of trade, particularly through the Attari-Wagah border. He stated, “This step can yield significant benefits for Punjab and the adjoining states, while firmly upholding our zero-tolerance policy towards Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and safeguarding our sovereignty.”

Arora opined that the resumption of trade through the Attari-Wagah border could catalyse economic growth in Punjab, which has historically relied on cross- border trade. Increasing trade volumes can revitalize local industries especially the Cycle Industry, Textile/Hosiery Industry and provide a substantial boost to the state's economy.

Adding, he said with trade resumption, thousands of jobs could be created in sectors such as agriculture, textiles, and manufacturing. This is especially critical for Punjab, where unemployment is a pressing concern. The World Bank estimates that each $1 million in trade can generate approximately 13 jobs, translating to significant employment opportunities for local residents.

Further, he mentioned that small traders and businesses in Punjab and adjoining states, stand to benefit immensely from access to the Pakistani market, which consists of over 240 million consumers. This market access can lead to increased revenue and economic stability for local businesses, fostering entrepreneurship and innovation in the region.

Arora further opined that Punjab is a major agricultural hub. By reopening trade routes, farmers could gain access to new markets for their produce, potentially increasing their income and enhancing the viability of their businesses. This can also contribute to food security in the region.

Also, he said enhanced trade could lead to improvements in infrastructure, including better roads and transportation facilities. This not only benefits trade but also supports local communities in accessing markets and resources more efficiently.

Arora pointed out that according to a study by the Institute for Studies in Industrial Development (ISID), trade can significantly improve local economies by increasing the disposable income of families. Increased trade activities can lead to a multiplier effect, where every job created in the trade sector can support multiple jobs in related industries, benefiting local economies across Punjab and its neighboring states.

He categorically stated that while advocating for these trade benefits, it is essential to emphasize India’s unwavering commitment to a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism sponsored by Pakistan. Any trade discussions must prioritize India’s security concerns and sovereignty.

Summing up, Arora mentioned that these steps could be crucial for fostering a more positive relationship while ensuring that Punjab and its neighbouring states can reap the economic benefits of resumed trade.
