Mohali, March 23, 2013: The 2nd Senior Men/ Women National Football Tennis Federation Cup tournament commenced at Dussehra Ground here today.

Eight teams from various states are taking part in the two-day sport event. The opening ceremony was inaugurated by Balwant Singh Ramuwalia, Senior Vice President, Shiromani Akali Dal. Other prominent personalities including Varun Roojam, DC Mohali, Neeraj Bharti, Chief Parliamentary Secretary (Education), Himachal Pradesh, and Dilraj Singh Sandhewalia, Joint Commissioner SAS Nagar were also present at the ceremony.

The opening ceremony was marked with Gurbani Keertan and performance by Punjab Police band. A march past by participating teams along with a classical dance performance and fireworks remained other attractions of the ceremony. Teams from the states of Punjab, Tamil Nadu, J&K, Delhi, Haryana, Odisha and Chandigarh will contest for the winner title.

Balwant Singh Ramuwalia, said, “Today its 23rd March which is also recognised as Martyr Day of Bhagat Singh along with Rajguru and Sukhdev. So on this occasion I would like to convey to all the young players and respected delegates present here to keep the honour and pride of our great nation as the foremost thing as the future of our country rests on the shoulders of youth. Other then that I urge the whole nation from this stage to stand against the evil of female foeticide, which is a great hindrance and a sign of great sorrow for our nation.”   

Udyog Rattan awardee Mr Hardeep Singh Saini, Chairman, Punjab Football Tennis Association (PFTA) said, “I thank all the respected guests and teams from different states of India to make this event such a successful one. On this occasion I would also like to announce Mr Neeraj Bharti as our new chief patron of UT FootballTennis Association for his great support and appreciation towards the sport.”

“This gives me immense pleasure to announce that the two-day National Football Tennis Federation Cup is being held at Mohali. Originated in 1987, this sport is played across 20 countries and from last 7 years India is one amongst them. Punjab, which has been playing Football Tennis from past four years is hosting this years cup,” he added.

Shalinder Anand, President, PFTA and Sarabjeet Singh, President, Mohali Football Tennis Association (MFTA) welcomed the honourable guests.
