Rare surgery for removal of cancerous tumour from liver performed at DMCH

Ludhiana, June 16, 2016: Liver cancers are a big problem in Punjab and lot of them are rendered incurable without ever getting a formal assessment by specialist teams. Recently, seventy-year old patient suffering from liver cancer was admitted to the hospital. Earlier, his case was considered inoperable by other hospitals of the state. His cancer had spread locally within the liver and the patient was given only a few months to live.

While undergoing treatment at DMCH Liver Transplant Unit, Dr HRS Girn (Hepatobiliary and Liver Transplant Surgeon) and his team successfully removed 1.8 kg of cancerous tumour from patient’s liver after an eight hour long operation. Patient got discharged from the hospital after eight days of hospitalisation and seventy percent of the patient’s damaged liver along with the tumour has been successfully removed.

Giving information, Dr Girn said that Liver Transplant Unit in DMCH is a specialized centre for surgery of Liver and Pancreas including Liver transplant. Ever since its inception in year 2014,over three hundred complex operations for liver, pancreas and gall bladder cancers and other liver conditions have been successfully performed.
