Record-Breaking Institutions Closures: Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur lashes out at government

Dharamshala, December 21, 2024: Former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition, Jairam Thakur, launched a scathing attack on the Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu-led government, accusing it of setting records for institutional closures and misleading the state.

Speaking to reporters, Thakur alleged that the government had closed approximately 2,000 operational institutions in just two years, including over 1,000 schools.

Thakur criticized the government’s actions, stating, “The current administration has shattered records—not of development, but of regression. By shutting schools with as few as 10 to 25 students, the government has undermined the education system, which once prioritized opening schools even for a single child. This dictatorial approach is damaging the state's progress.”

In the Assembly, Thakur claimed that Chief Minister Sukhu and his ministers had falsely asserted that the closures were based on thorough assessments. “The Chief Minister started closing institutions the day after taking the oath. What kind of need-based assessment was done within 24 hours?” he questioned.

He further accused the government of operating out of political vengeance, citing the example of a division of Jal Shakti in Sukhu’s own constituency. “This division, established by our government, was closed immediately after the new administration took over, only to be reopened four months later. What changed in four months to warrant its reopening?”

Thakur emphasized that the Vidhan Sabha is a platform for ensuring government accountability and advancing development, not for “misleading the public with lies.” He called on the government to abandon its "intoxication of power" and focus on constructive governance.
