Chandigarh, July 16, 2022: A regular liver transplant OPD launched at Max Hospital, Mohali on Saturday. The hospital is also going to establish a comprehensive liver care unit which will benefit patients from HP, Haryana and J&K.
Speaking during the launch, Dr.Abhideep Chaudhary, senior director of liver transplantation said that the liver is a very important organ and one cannot survive if it does not function properly. If the liver is failing, or if one has primary liver cancer, a liver transplant could save life.
Dr. Chaudhary further informed that many things can cause the liver to stop working, including immediate (acute) causes like toxic poisoning and chronic liver diseases. End-stage liver disease occurs when the liver has lost its maximum normal functioning. Several liver conditions can cause this condition, of which cirrhosis is a common cause. Quoting WHO data Dr. Chaudhary said liver disease deaths in India have reached 3.17% of total deaths.
Dr. Kaptan Singh, associate consultant- HPB surgery & liver transplantation said that end stage liver disease is the result of chronic and progressive liver disease. It usually means that a large part of the liver tissue has been replaced with scar and fibrosis tissue, which obstructs the blood flow to the liver leading to portal hypertension. This is also called cirrhosis of the liver.”
Damage to the liver is reversible in the initial stages because the liver has got tremendous power of regeneration. But it requires long follow up for chronic liver disease or liver transplant for end stage damage, said Dr Atul Sachdev, medical director & HOD gastroenterology.
Meanwhile, the OPD will also benefit patients with hepato pancreatico biliary (HPB) diseases, which refers to any condition that affects the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and the bile ducts.
