Chandigarh, September 26, 2012: The Punjab Government has approved the complete rehabilitation of four major canals of the state for strengthening irrigation facilities.

This project would be completed in three months with the investment of Rs.23.46 crore. This was disclosed by Sohan Singh Thandal, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Irrigation, Punjab.

He said that the approval for this project was given in a meeting held under the chairmanship of Parkash Singh Badal, Chief Minister, Punjab with Irrigation Minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon.

He said that the Finance Department has already given its nod for the expenditure on this project, which would be to the tune of Rs.23.46 crore.

Thandal further said that the canals, which would be rehabilitated, are Ghuman Distributary, Mansa Distributary and Minor-1 and Minor-2 of Jodhpur Distributary.

He said that the rehabilitation process would be started soon and would be completed in the stipulated period of three months. CPS said that Irrigation Minister Sekhon has rationally highlighted the issue with the CM. He also apprised the Chief Minister about long pending demand of the people to strengthen these canals so as to enable them receiving better irrigation facilities.

He said that lining of some of the minors/rivulets was getting old, which has adversely affected the irrigation facilities in the region. He said that keeping this problem in mind, the rehabilitation process of these canals has been approved.
