Roads and railway tracks blocked by farmer unions, commuter bear the brunt
Hundreds of farmers belonging to various farmers unions under the banner of Sanyukt Kissan Morcha (non-political) today blocked the railway tracks and highways for three hours. The farmers were protesting to express their anguish over the slow lifting of the paddy in the grain market.
Ferozepur, October 13, 2024: Hundreds of farmers belonging to various farmers unions under the banner of Sanyukt Kissan Morcha (non-political) today blocked the railway tracks and highways for three hours. The farmers were protesting to express their anguish over the slow lifting of the paddy in the grain market.
Due to the protest, total number of 15 trains had been affected. As per information, two trains (06960, 06955) were cancelled, three trains were delayed (06947, 01612, 04597), four trains were partially cancelled (04591, 04592, 06983, 06984), one train was rescheduled (14674), one train got delayed (14505) while few other trains were diverted.
The members of the farmer’s union blocked highways at octroi number 7 in the cantonment area, Talwandi Bhai and Makhu. Avtar Singh Mehma State body member of Krantikari Kissan Union said that the farmers had to sit on dharna since the lifting of paddy was very slow. “The farmers have been sitting in the grain markets for the last several days and their paddy has not been lifted despite tall claims of the state government. We came to know that the government has not even purchased the rice from the mill owners since last year and now the new season has commenced”, said Mehma.
