Rs 694 lakh fine charged in 5228 cases in last 43 days

In the constant efforts to curb the menace of power thefts, the teams of different zones of distribution wing Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) are conducting systematic checking in their respective areas.

Ludhiana, May 18, 2022: In the constant efforts to curb the menace of power thefts, the teams of different zones of distribution wing Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) are conducting systematic checking in their respective areas.

In the last 43 days, the teams have checked as many as 54212 connections and detected a total of 5228 cases including 1285 cases of power thefts and 3943 cases of unauthorized use of electricity (UUE)/ unauthorized extension (UE). The total fine charged by the teams in these 54212 cases was Rs 694 lakhs.

This checking was conducted from April 4 till May 16 under Zero tolerance drive started by PSPCL under the directions of Chief Minister Punjab Bhagwant Singh Mann and Punjab Power Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO.

The teams of zone Border has checked a total of 20919 connections of which 439 cases of theft were detected and 1059 cases of UUE/UE were detected. The teams charged a fine of Rs 79 lakhs against 439 cases of theft and Rs 47 lakh against 1059 cases of UUE/UE.

Similarly, in the central zone as many as 7130 connections were checked and a total of 687 cases, including 171 cases of theft and 516 UUE/UE cases, were detected and total fine charged was Rs 91 lakhs.

The teams of the North zone checked 9992 connections in the past 43 days and detected 72 cases of thefts and 883 UUE/UE cases. The total fine charged in 955 cases was Rs 56 lakhs.

In the South zone, the teams had checked 6028 connections of which 146 cases of thefts and 517 cases of UUE/UE were detected. The total fine charged was Rs 111 lakh.

A total of 1425 cases, including 457 cases of theft and 968 UUE/UE cases, were detected in the West zone where as many as 10,143 connections were checked. The teams charged a total of Rs 311 lakh in the last 43 days.

Power Minister Harbhajan Singh said that the department wants to curb the menace of power thefts to provide uninterrupted supply to its consumers. He said that the drive will be intensified and he warned of stringent action against consumers found violating power consumption norms.
