Kapurthala, July 22, 2013: Punjab Government in a campaign to save ground water has launched various projects in the state to provide alternate ways to Farmers for irrigation. As per these initiatives Soil Conservation Department in the district has launched a project to provide treated water for irrigation.

Disclosing this here today, DS Mangat, Deputy Commissioner, Kapurthala said that under Sutlej River Action Plan Slug Water Treatment Project is launched in the North Block of Phagwara. He said that this project would be completed with the cost of Rs 7.99 crore.

Mangat said that under this project 18 kilometer pipeline is being laid down which would provide irrigation water supply to 550 hectare area. He added that Soil Conservation department is using ultra modern techniques to bring more and more land under agriculture cultivation and irrigation facilities are also being provided so that farmers could benefit more by enhancing their agriculture production.

Deputy Commissioner said that under Integrated Water Shed programme 16 villages would be covered with Rs 5.43 crore and 4,525 hectare area would be covered. He further said that 18 villages in block Sultanpur Lodhi would be covered with Rs 6.48 crore covering 5,040 hectare area in the year 2014-15.

Mangat said that in an effort to save ground water under SWC-9 Scheme irrigation facilities provided to the farms by underground supply of water. He said that for this Rs 10.84 lakh financial assistance has been provided to the farmers.

Deputy Commissioner said that Punjab Government has also launched a Micro Irrigation Scheme under National Mission of Micro Irrigation to solve the problem of decreasing underground water level. He said that Rs 18.75 lakh was given as financial assistance to 59 farmers in the year 2012-13. He further said that farmers producing vegetable on one acre are being given tubwell connections on priority and 350 tubewell connections are provided under this scheme till date.

Mangat said that model fish Pond has been established at village Jarjpur in block Sultanpur Lodhi with the cost of Rs.7.48 lakh.
