RT PCR important but on right time: Dr HK Kharbanda
Says if a patient undergoes it early or very late, the infection cycle may lead to severe problems
Chandigarh:
There’s no doubt that RT PCR test is the most sought out procedure to spot the Covid-19 pandemic, but one should take care of the many things including the timing of conducting the test, said famous Dr HK Kharbanda here today.
“Time is very important while getting the RT PCR test done. If a patient undergoes it early or very late, the infection cycle may lead to severe problems,” said Kharbanda. He said that due to untimely tests, many people failed to get proper treatment on time. “Besides timing, close contact with an infected person is also dangerous. The infection may travel through sneeze or cough. Social distancing and wearing a mask is very important to prevent catching the virus. A person will be deemed to be in close contact with an infected person if he or she was in contact with him or her 2 days before the infection starts or 10 days after the infection has settled in that person.
The virus takes 5 to 14 days to settle in a human body. And symptoms start within a week of infection. The RT PCR test should be done within 5 to 7 days after a person starts showing symptoms of the virus. If a person is asymptomatic, the test should be done after seven days of meeting an infected person. Before that the virus might not get spotted in the RT PCR test. So if a person starts showing symptoms, he or she should immediately isolate himself or herself. Normally the virus stays in a human body for 14 days but a person can also get a negative test report after seven days of the virus entering into the body. The symptoms in the body of the person will also go after testing negative for the virus.”
