Ludhiana, September 14, 2023: The two-day Kisan Mela that began here today at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) also saw the participation of final year students of B.Sc. Agriculture undergoing their Rural Agricultural Work Experience (RAWE) under the Department of Extension Education.
The Campaign was flagged off by Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor of PAU, and Ms Surbhi Malik, Deputy Commissioner of Ludhiana District. The Campaign chiefly highlighted resource conservation technologies and social issues existing in rural Punjab. The Campaign was spearheaded by Dr TS Riar, Additional Director Communication, Dr Nirmal Jaura, Director Students’ Welfare, and Dr Kuldeep Singh, Head, Department of Extension Education.
Dr Satbir Singh Gosal while throwing light on the significance of RAWE asserted that the primary purpose of RAWE is to provide students with practical, hands-on experience in rural agricultural settings. This hands-on experience allows them to apply the theoretical knowledge they’ve gained in the classroom to real-world agricultural practices. It’s an important component of agricultural education because it helps students to develop practical skills and a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities in rural agriculture, he added.
Dr Kuldeep Singh stressed upon the instrumental role of the youth in rural and agricultural development; while Dr TS Riar in his welcoming remarks appraised the farmers about the instrumental role of PAU in Crop Residue Management. The students were encouraged to engage in multifaceted agri-tasks with a specific focus on sustainable agricultural practices.
The faculty of the Department also guided the students in the effective conduct of the campaign. The campaign blended the use of poetry, slogans, songs and placard display to further the message of sustainable agri-practices.
Overall, the RAWE Campaign turned out to be a valuable educational experience for aspiring agricultural professionals as it helped to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the field of agriculture.
