DMCH organising a lecture on safe Diwali.

Ludhiana, November 10, 2012: Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), Ludhiana in collaboration with North Zone Association of Plastic Surgeons of India (NZAPSI) recently organised a series of interactive sessions and hands-on-workshop with the students of various schools of the city on burns prevention during Diwali.

Dr. Sanjeev Uppal, Professor and Head of Plastic Surgery and President, NZAPSI at DMCH spoke to the students and gave tips to the students that how they should burn crackers to avoid any accident. Children, usually, like to fire crackers many days before Diwali. Anaars and Rockets are very dangerous and children should ignite these crackers with safety.

He cautioned that all accidents due to fireworks occur as a result of carelessness, negligence and ignorance. But these can certainly be avoided by observing some very simple precautions. A small negligence in the part of kids can turn the celebration into a mishap or personal damage. All of us enjoy the pleasure of light and sound but when disaster strikes the injured has to bear the cross.  With each passing year, incidents of fire burning during Diwali Season have been accelerating at an alarming rate. During Diwali, parents need to be more cautious for the kids and should take necessary safety measures to avoid any accident.

Dr. Uppal also adviced students to educate maximum number of people after the session. Fire is a good master when it is in our control but it becomes bad master when goes out of control, it does not identify people who come in its contact that weather he/she is a celebrity, a politician, a student, a teacher, and so on.  The students participated in the session and also asked the queries, which were answered by the doctor.

 Tips for safer Diwali-

Ø  Always burst crackers and fireworks in an open space. Always do this in presense of elders.

Ø  Wear tight fitting clothes preferably made of cotton.

Ø  Always keep a bucket full of water nearby.

Ø  Always keep the rockets in a relatively big sized heavy bottle and the tip should face upwards.

Ø  Anars should be lit with a sparkle (phulzhari) sitting parallel on floor and not bending over the anar.

Ø  Never explode crackers and other things in hand.

Ø  Store the crackers away from the place and in a metal container with a lid on.

Ø  Never try to explode crackers with empty cans over it.

Ø  Always keep sparkles away from body.

Ø  Purchase good quality crackers with ISI certification.

Ø  In case of fire douse fire with water and if alone lie down on ground and roll sideways to put off the fire. Later on pour water on the burnt surface till burning sensation is over.
