Chandigarh, September 3, 2024: The second day of the ongoing celebrations of Poshan Maah witnessed the students of M.Sc. Foods and Nutrition showcasing their culinary skills by setting up a stall featuring an innovative and nutritious recipe- Jowar Vada Pav accompanied by flavourful coconut chutney at Government Home Science College, Chandigarh.

This initiative, rooted in the theme of ‘Nutrition for All’highlighted the versatility and health benefits of millets, particularly Jowar (sorghum), which is known for its high fiber content, gluten-free nature, and rich source of essential nutrients. The Jowar Vada Pav, a unique twist on the traditional Indian street food, was meticulously prepared and standardized by the students as part of their curriculum as well as celebrations of National Nutrition Month.

The students embraced the "Earn While You Learn" concept by engaging in mass cooking within the Institutional Food Service Lab. This hands-on experience allowed them to apply their theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios, learning the intricacies of professional food service. It was an opportunity for students to hone their culinary and entrepreneurial skills and also a platform to promote the importance of millets in everyday diets. The Jowar Vada Pav stall was met with overwhelming enthusiasm from faculty, staff and students. The event also served as a platform, raising awareness about the significance of incorporating nutritious ingredients into daily meals and encouraging a shift towards healthier eating habits.

Prof. Sudha Katyal, Principal, highly appreciated the remarkable efforts of the students in their innovative approach in promoting millets and for its forward-thinking ideas and commitment to integrating traditional grains like millets into modern diets, aligning perfectly with national nutritional goals.
