Science and technology to offer tools to eradicate pollution

Kapurthala, December 2, 2021: Pushpa Gujral Science City organized  a webinar on National Pollution control Day. Around 70 students and teachers from all over Punjab participated through virtual mode. Giving introductory remarks at the occasion, Dr. Neelima Jerath, Director General, Science City said that National Pollution Control Day is organized to make sure that the people understand the long-term effects of pollution on our life, health and ecosystems. It is also necessary to remember the people who have lost their lives due to pollution disasters such as the victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy in India during the intervening night of December 2 and 3 due to leakage of Methyl isocyanate from the Union carbide Plant.   Science and technology offers important solutions which are environment friendly and economically viable besides tools to help in monitoring of pollution levels, and that these should be used for the benefit of the society, she added.
Er. Karunesh Garg, Member Secretary, Punjab Pollution Control Board Patiala was the key speaker at this occasion. During his address he said that the day aims to bring awareness amongst people about prevention of air, soil, noise, and water pollution with the key objective to educate people about the importance of Pollution Control Acts and make them aware about industrial disasters. He urged the participants to sensitize the people especially the farming community not to burn stubble/crop residue which not only damage the soil texture by affecting its fertility but also pollute the environment and cause harm to human health. He informed that Punjab Government is making lot of efforts to provide alternatives to burning and for creating awareness among the farmers.
Dr. Rajesh Grover, Director, Pushpa Gujral Science city present at the occasion said that there is dire need to increase public awareness on prevention of different types of Pollution in making a healthy, prosperous and sustainable future. Eco-Friendly practices can certainly help to create pollution free atmosphere and saving planet, he added.
