Science City Celebrated World Wetland Day

Kapurthala, February 2, 2024: Pushpa Gujral Science City celebrated World Wetlands Day with a passionate appeal for action, emphasizing the critical need to conserve and sustain wetlands. Commemorated annually on 2 February, this day holds significance as it commemorates the adoption of the Ramsar Convention in 1971. Over 200 students from various parts of Punjab actively participated in the event which centred around the theme "Wetlands and Human Wellbeing."

Dr. Neelima Jerath, Former Director General, Science City, who had started working on wetland restoration in 1988, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In her address she stressed upon the urgency of safeguarding wetlands underscoring that preventive action for conservation of wetlands is far more feasible than attempting restoration or re-creation at a later stage, which may prove to be too late. Dr. Jerath highlighted the significance of wetlands as vital components of our lives, storing carbon dioxide to mitigate climate change, supporting activities such as fishing, farming, tourism, as well as providing an essential habitat for biodiversity, particularly for migratory birds. Further, these ecosystems play a crucial role in acting as natural buffers against river flooding and safeguarding coastlines. She further informed that Punjab, with its rich water resources, was home to six Ramsar Sites (wetlands of international importance) besides a number of wetlands of National and state importance. Pushpa Gujral Science City had set up a Bird gallery in 2015 where an interesting interactive exhibit on wetland ecosystem can be seen by the visitors.

Dr. Rajesh Grover, Director, Science City present at the occasion said that this international event is dedicated to raise awareness about the indispensable role wetlands play in our ecosystem and promote its conservation. He emphasized the threats posed by urban development, pollution, and climate change to these crucial ecosystems. Recognizing these challenges, Science City  is committed to promote awareness for the sustainable management and conservation of wetlands.
