Pushpa Gujral Science City celebrated World Science Day for Peace and Development with enthusiasm, drawing participation from over 200 students and teachers from across Punjab. This year’s theme, “Global Science for Global Wellbeing,” underscored the vital role of science in society and highlighted the need for public engagement in meaningful discussions about scientific advancements.

Kapurthala, November 12, 2024: Pushpa Gujral Science City celebrated World Science Day for Peace and Development with enthusiasm, drawing participation from over 200 students and teachers from across Punjab. This year’s theme, “Global Science for Global Wellbeing,” underscored the vital role of science in society and highlighted the need for public engagement in meaningful discussions about scientific advancements.

Dr. Rajesh Grover, Director, Science City, in his introductory remarks on the occasion, highlighted the indispensable role of science in our daily lives and the profound impact of science, technology and innovation in addressing everyday challenges, enhancing knowledge, and improving education and overall quality of life. Dr. Grover encouraged students to actively participate in local, national and international science fairs as platforms to demonstrate their skills, creativity, and potential to innovate. He emphasized the importance of developing innovative solutions to protect our planet, stressing responsible resource use and the adoption of clean energy. He further called upon the youth to harness the power of science not only to advance knowledge but also to contribute to a sustainable future.

Dr. Pooja Devi, Principal Scientist at CSIR-CSIO was the key speaker in the programme. In her insightful lecture, “Empowering Future Generations through Science and Sustainable Development,” Dr. Devi spoke about the transformative power of science in creating solutions for sustainable development. She traced the journey of scientific exploration and discovery, demonstrating how curiosity has fuelled advancements in technology from the atomic era to today’s engineering and medical breakthroughs.

Dr. Devi highlighted India's historical contributions to global scientific thought, stretching back to the Vedic period, instilling a strong sense of pride, confidence, and critical thinking necessary for a self-reliant India. She called on all present to nurture curiosity and embrace innovation for the benefit of present and future generations.

The day also included a declamation competition, where participants impressed the audience with their speaking skills and knowledge of scientific topics. The results of the competition are as follows: The first prize has been clinched by Harmehar Singh from M.G.N. Public School, Jalandhar. The second prize was awarded to Jasmine Kaur from Mayar World School, Jalandhar, while Janki from Mandi Hardiay Ganj Girls' High School, Kapurthala, secured the third prize.
