Seminar on Life and Works of S. Ramanujan held at Doaba College

Jalandhar, November 17, 2021: DBT Star College Scheme  sponsored seminar on “Life and Works of S. Ramanujan”, was organised by Department of Mathematics of Doaba College . Dr. Ashish Arora, Professor, Head/Deputy Dean, Faculty of Sciences, IKG Punjab Technical University, Kapurthala, was the resource person for the event. He was accorded a  hearty welcome by Prof. Arvind Nanda-Head, Principal Dr. Pardeep Bhandari, faculty and students.  The purpose of organizing this talk was to enlighten the students about the contribution of Great Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan to the mathematical society.

Principal Dr Pardeep Bhandari  gave the insight about the Hollywood movie ‘The man knew infinity’, based on Ramanujan’s personal life. Inspiring from the life of Ramanujan, he advised the students that everyone should make their soul so sensitive that small things around one’s should affect them. He also encouraged the students to be motivated by the works of Ramanujan. After that, Dr. Rajiv Khosla, HoD, Biotechnology, gave opening remarks regarding DBT scheme. He informed that Doaba College, Jalandhar is the first Govt. Aided College in Punjab to get DBT star status. He also introduced everyone to fully functional Computation Mathematical Lab of P.G. Department of Mathematics, Doaba College which is an advanced, high tech and real time experience Lab in Punjab. 
 
The resource person, Dr. Ashish Arora started his talk by giving three examples showing the contribution of Indian scientists in the world. He surprised everyone by telling that the modern mathematician S. Ramanujan, at the age of thirteen read S.L. Loney book in depth and was able to develop his incredible insights while working in isolation and discovered many remarkable results in his childhood which are considered as extraordinary today. The speaker showed some pictures of his home and certificates. He inspired the audience with the real stories of Ramanujan’s life, achievements and honours which Ramanujan got in his short span of life. He also added important points of letter which was written by Ramanujan to G. H. Hardy and inspired Hardy later on. Dr. Arora told that Ramanujan taught us how we can write a number and function in infinite series. The resource person informed to the students about Ramanujan number 1729, his magic squares, partition theory, highly composite numbers, and combinational analysis.  Prof. Ashish ended his talk to show some recognitions, books and publications of Ramanujan. In the end of the event, Prof. Gulshan Sharma thanked everyone for gracing the occasion.
