SEMINAR ON SUBSURFACE DRIP IRRIGATION

Ludhiana, May 17, 2017: The Department of Soil and Water Engineering, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), organised a one-day seminar-cum-group discussion on “Subsurface Drip Irrigation” in the University. The scientists from Departments of Soil and Water Engineering, Agronomy and Vegetable Science participated in the seminar.

The Chief Guest, Dr Ashok Kumar, Director of Research, PAU, stressed on using water saving technologies to conserve the precious natural resource ‘water’. He also discussed the use of surface and sub-surface drip as water saving technology.

Earlier, in his welcomed address, Dr Rajan Aggarwal, Head of the department, shed light on the importance and background of sub-surface drip irrigation.

Dr H.S. Sidhu, Senior Research Engineer from Borlaug Institute of South Asia, Ludhiana, delivered a talk on “Conservation Agriculture and Precision Water and Nutrient Management in Cereal Based System using Sub-surface Drip.” He highlighted the benefits of conservation agriculture over the conventional agricultural practices. He also discussed the beneficial use of conservation agriculture along with sub-surface drip irrigation for rice-wheat and maize-wheat cropping system.

Dr Rakesh Sharda, Senior Extension Specialist, gave a presentation on “Experiences in Sub-Surface Drip Irrigation in the Department of Soil and Water Engineering.” He discussed the depth of placement of lateral under sub-surface drip irrigation for sugarcane, tomato and other crops. He also delved on the success of drip irrigation for fruit and field crops. Later, he proposed the vote of thanks.
