Ludhiana, September 14, 2012: Shoe manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers staged a protest near Clock Tower Chowk here today and burnt an effigy of value added tax (VAT) as a mark of protest.
They also observed strike today.
A memorandum was also submitted to the deputy commissioner.
It may be mentioned here that earlier, there was 5.5 per cent VAT on items except leather-made items and 12.50 per cent on leather made items.
Now, the state government has introduced 5.5 per cent VAT and 10 per cent surcharge (total 6.05 per cent) on all footwears on the sale price upto Rs.250.
Similarly, the state government has introduced 13 per cent VAT and 10 per cent surcharge (total 14.30 per cent) on all footwears on the sale price above Rs.250.
