Sikh Environment Day celebrations by noted environmentalist Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal.
Chandigarh, March 25, 2014: Thousands of Sikhs all across the world held celebrations for more than a week to coincide with festivities of World Sikh Environment Day, which is observed on March 14. EcoSikh, which is headquartered in Washington and has a wide base in Punjab, launched this initiative on March 14, the coronation day of seventh Sikh Guru, Guru Har Rai.
Ravneet Singh, India Project Manager of EcoSikh said, in a statement given at Chandigarh, "The celebrations continued for more than a week and were held in Punjab and other parts of India. Gurdwaras in countries like Nepal, Canada, Dubai, Norway, Sweden, UK, France, USA, Indonesia and Ghana also hosted events. Apart from religious services, themes associated with environment formed part of the celebrations at each venue.”
In Punjab, Universities and Colleges held seminars, plantation drives and bicycle rallies thereby engaging youth in creating long term constructive plans for tackling the degradation of environment in the state.
President of EcoSikh, Dr. Rajwant Singh, said, "It is a sheer pride that Sikhs have created history by taking action at an International level to preserve Mother Earth as envisioned by the Sikh Gurus. We hope that this will inspire future generations to remain environmental friendly.”
In all over 2000 Sikh Gurdwaras, Schools and organisations actively participated in conducting environment rallies, eco-prayers and inspirational movie sessions to spread the word about saving the planet. It is noteworthy that under the directive of Avtar Singh Makkar, President, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee (SGPC), 145 Gurdwaras across Punjab, Haryana & Mumbai organised plantation drives with special awareness programmes, in educational institutions run under SGPC auspices. Prominent environmentalists Baba Sewa Singh and Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal also ran plantation drives and educational initiatives in their respective areas & directed villages to adopt environment preservation.
