Chandigarh, September 14, 2012: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Capt Amarinder Singh today said that the Rs 5 per litre hike in the prices of diesel was quite unfortunate.

In a statement issued here today, he said, however the prices of diesel and other petroleum products are determined by the international prices of the crude oil and the Centre has little control over it. He pointed out, the government of India was facing with under-recoveries to the tune of Rs 1.87 lakh crores due to massive oil subsidy.

The PCC President asked the Punjab government to reduce the VAT and other taxes on the petroleum products which are the highest in Punjab as compared to other states. He said, if the Punjab government was really concerned about the people of the state, it must reduce the VAT on petroleum products.

Capt Amarinder said, even during his period when there was increase in the prices of petroleum products his government instead of blaming the centre, reduced and minimised the VAT in Punjab to provide some relief to the people.

He said, the Punjab Government, instead of breast beating, should take an initiative of its own to provide relief to the people of the state.
