Sony Entertainment Television presents Kyun Utthe Dil Chod Aaye

Continuing its endeavour to bring well-researched, differentiated and relevant shows to its viewers, Sony Entertainment Television is all set to launch Kyun Utthe Dil Chod Aaye starting tonight. Set in the pre-partition era, in the year 1947, the show traces the journey of three young women – Amrit, Vashma and Radha. Based in Lahore, a city that was culturally rich and progressive; where writers and poets thrived with passion; where people enjoyed a dynamic milieu, these three young women, on the threshold of adulthood, were hoping to realise their dreams, hope, aspirations and love. But with the changing fate of the country, how did life change for them? What did the new Independent India hold in store for them? 

Produced by Shashi Sumeet Productions, known for their distinct narratives, and bringing alive an era on television, Kyun Utthe Dil Chod Aaye premieres tonight and will air every Mon-Fri at 9:00PM only on Sony Entertainment Television. Music plays an important part in this narrative and well-known music director Uttam Singh, known for his contributions to films like Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, Pinjar and many others has composed the title track for the show. 
 
Amrit Sahni, all of 17, having a flair for writing, pens her thoughts secretly as Ranjhan. Being a female love story writer of that time, she lives in the constant underlying fear of being exposed as Ranjhan. She has a soft corner for Randheer, a popular cartoonist and Editor in Chief of a renowned newspaper that publishes Ranjhan’s stories. A dreamer at heart, she hopes for a free India – a country with no fear or restrictions for women. But with the impending partition, will she be able to realise her dream of living in a country without restrictions for women? Will she be able to disclose her pen name and be able to write freely? Will her love for Randheer bear any repercussions?

Vashma, Amrit’s best friend and confidante, is a well-educated girl from a conservative Muslim family who challenges the societal norms and dreams of being a Kathak dancer. Only in the most adverse situation, does Vashma realise that she is deeply in love with her childhood friend Uday – Amrit’s cousin, who aspires to play hockey for India. Both Vashma & Uday don't realise when or how their friendship develops into a passionate bond of love. But at the brink of Independence, what turn will this love story take?

Radha an uneducated girl and a wandering performing artist, from a humble background, gets married to Amrit’s uncle who is 20 years older than her. An inquisitive yet demure Radha is grateful to be a part of a prominent family and is happy about the opportunity that propels her from rags to riches. Being the same age as Amrit and Vashma, Radha is quite the contrast in comparison. While the two girls are expecting empowerment and freedom in many ways from an Independent India, Radha is focused on being a dutiful wife and not stepping on anyone’s toes in her newfound family. How will the new India change Radha’s perspective?

Lending a cinematic touch to the show, the makers have paid attention to the minutest of detail to bring alive the pre-independence/ pre-partition era. From the characters, to their looks, the dialect being used, the sets and the props, everything has been authenticated to precision.
 
The show features Gracy Bitin Goswami as Amrit; Aanchal as Vashma and Pranali as Radha. Actor Zaan Khan has been cast in a key role of Randheer, while Shagun Pandey will be seen as Uday. Actor Yash Tonk will be seen as Lala Brij Kishore. The diverse and talented cast also includes Kanika Maheshwari, Avtar Gill, Geeta Tyagi, Vaishnavi and Nasiruddin in key roles.

Gracy Bitin Goswami, essays the characyer of Amrit Sahni said, “I started my career as an actor with Sony Entertainment Television’s Bandhan, and I am very excited about strengthening my bond with the channel further through this beautiful role of Amrit in Kyun Utthe Dil Chhod Aaye. The show has a simple and subtle narrative, but it addresses some hard issues that in many ways are relevant even today. I am very proud to take on this role of a woman, who had a progressive mind back in 1947 pre-independence era and who dared to dream.”

Aanchal, who essays the character of Vashma said, “I have always been on the lookout for roles that reiterate the strength of a women. Kyun Utthe Dil Chhod Aaye turned out to be a perfect fit. I had to do a bit of my own research to get the tehzeeb right. Vashma, the character I essay, is courageous for her time, outspoken and passionate. She goes from being brave, to giving up in life and then resurrecting herself to face reality with a vengeance. In my opinion, it's a good example to set. I am looking forward to the reaction from the audience.”

Pranali, essays the character of Radha said, “To essay the character of Radha was quite challenging. She is quite different from the other two characters in the show – Amrit and Vashma, even though they are of the same age. The way the narrative of Kyu Utthe Dil Chod Aaye has been written, is simply impressive. To live the pre-independence era has been a dream. It is very interesting to play a girl who leads an oppressed life and struggles for survival at first, but these very experiences of life make her more aware of her rights.”
