Ludhiana, July 5, 2024: The Speaker of the Punjab Legislative Assembly, Kultar Singh Sandhwan, paid floral tributes to the legendary Sikh Revolutionary and freedom fighter, Baba Maharaj Singh, at village Rabbon Uchi on Friday. Payal MLA Manwinder Singh Giaspura, SDM Charanjeet Singh, and other prominent personalities were accompanied.
During the event, Sandhwan stated that Baba Maharaj Singh Ji was the first martyr of Jang-E-Azadi. He emphasized that Baba Maharaj Singh led an anti-British movement in Punjab after the first Anglo-Sikh war, urging people to strive for the unity and integrity of the nation and to follow the path shown by the first Sikh martyr of the independence struggle.
Sandhwan also highlighted that Baba Maharaj Singh Ji was a great patriot who sacrificed his life for the freedom of the country. He noted that although attempts were made to portray the 1857 revolt as the beginning of the country's freedom movement, history proves that Baba Maharaj Singh had initiated the struggle for independence when he attempted to free the last Sikh ruler, Maharaja Dalip Singh, from the clutches of the British. However, the British received a tip-off about the plans made by Baba Maharaj Singh and his comrades. Subsequently, he was imprisoned and sent to Singapore, where he suffered innumerable hardships and was martyred on July 5, 1856.
Additionally, the Speaker announced a donation of Rs 10 lakh for the historic place of Baba Maharaj Singh in the village.
