Special extension lecture on the theme `Lifestyle Diseases in Modern Life'

Ludhiana, November 24, 2021: IQAC Cell of University Institute of Laws, Panjab University Regional Centre, Ludhiana organized a special Extension lecture  on the theme 'Lifestyle Diseases in Modern Life' on November 24, 2021. The keynote speaker of the event was Dr. Ravinder Kochhar, Medical Director, LMH Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana who enlightened the students about the significant lifestyle changes that have occurred in the past few decades and how they have led us to be more vulnerable to diseases. 

Prof. Arti Puri , Director ,PURC , Ludhiana extended  warm welcome to the esteemed guest.

The session emphasised on the importance of a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent diseases.  The speaker talked about the increasing alcohol consumption and adverse effects of routine fast food consumption. Increasing casualties and mental diseases are the results of the unhealthy lifestyle that we are leading. He also advised at least 45 minutes of walking upto 3 to 4 kilometers to burn calories and better productivity. 


Dr. Kochhar laid stress on the fact that increasing pollution is making it difficult to yield the fruit of nature and lead a healthy lifestyle. He focused on the need of giving the body the time to digest the food and the unreasonable eating habits making the digestive system weak. 

The speaker highlighted the role of stress in increasing the vulnerability of individuals to diseases; hypertension , migraine are the results of increasing stress. The congestion when blood rush to the brain becomes unbalanced, it leads to a permanent effect on the temperament of the individual. 

Increasing depression in young generations is a consequence of increased competition and over expectations leading to higher levels of stress. Excessive usage of mobiles and social media is also a factor affecting the overall health of people. 

The speaker provided VERY Useful  tips that if we tried to live a life with sufficient needs not wants, not surrendering ourselves for the modern lifestyle and dependence on materialistic things we would be living a healthy life. Mental health has an adverse effect because of the routine followed by the students. A good sleep cycle can help with ease of mind. A diet which is available in a particular season should be eaten and a balanced diet is suppose to be eaten, amount of sufficient nutrients required by the body should be eaten as excess of anything is bad.

"Lifestyle won’t be disturbed if your stomach has right ingredients.”,
The speaker threw light on the fact that with today’s fast life people prefer to eat fast food, filled with saturated fats which is good for their tongue but not stomach. Food which is more spicy, loaded with unhealthy carbs, fats, artificial sugar which leads to food poisoning, obesity, diabetes, acidity and the list goes on. Humans should eat food which can be digested by the stomach.

Dr. Ravinder Kochhar laud stress on the fact that individuals need to follow a lifestyle followed in the older times, money minded society has forgotten that a good body with healthy mind increases the ability of the body to work. Our body should be listened to and due to the lifestyle, we are following in 21st century and eating an unhealthy diet, our lifespan has decreased over the years.
Students were advised to take breaks during their online lectures or people working from home on their mobile or laptop. Sir also told students to blink their eyes constantly and not remain glued to the screen as it can lead to dryness in eyes. The numbness in body due to sitting for hours can become a chronic illness, but regular moving can help.

The eminent speaker concluded the session with basic tips and healthy eating habits that can help in creating a better lifestyle and prevent diseases like diabetes, cervical , etc. 

The event was convened by Dr. Pooja Sikka, IQAC Coordinator and proved to be a fruitful endeavour by the institute and students got the opportunity to learn
