Special lecture by Prof. Harish K. Puri on ‘Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and the Adoption of the Indian Constitution’

Chandigarh, November 27, 2024:  The Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Centre, in collaboration with the Department of Political Science, organised a special lecture by Prof. Harish K. Puri on ‘Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and the Adoption of the Indian Constitution.’

While celebrating Constitution Day, i.e., the 75th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Constitution of India, the central focus was on the contribution of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in the making of this Constitution. Beginning with Jawaharlal Nehru’s ‘Objectives Resolution’ as adopted by the Constituent Assembly, Prof. Harish K. Puri emphasised that Ambedkar's role went beyond merely drafting the Constitution.

Deeply committed to the political and emotional unity of India, Prof. Puri viewed his task as one of social revolution through democratic means. To achieve this, he involved the members of the Constituent Assembly in resolving conflicts and working through consensus. His warnings about the hurdles and dangers in our path remain wise reminders to us regarding the great responsibility of the citizens of India.

Prof. Harish K. Puri is a former professor of Political Science and Chairman of the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chair at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Punjab. He highlighted the process of forming the Constitution and the days leading up to its formalisation. The role played by Ambedkar and his speeches in the Assembly were emphasised, and the importance of fraternity and dignity was brought to the fore. The effectiveness of a Constitution, Prof. Puri concluded, is determined by those in power.

Earlier, Prof. Pampa Mukherjee, Chairperson of the Department of Political Science, opened the session, with Prof. Navjot, Coordinator of the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Centre, highlighting the importance of Constitution Day and formally introducing the speaker. The session concluded with a healthy question-and-answer round between the students and the speaker, followed by a formal vote of thanks from the Chair, Prof. Bhupinder Brar, Professor (Emeritus).
